Item Rating System
This is a letter rating system (A through D) for the items on
our website. This is to give an overall base as to the condition,
quality, and the value based on each individual price of the item.
These ratings are the opinion of Shogun Oriental Arts based on our
experience and research.
A + sign may be used after any letter to note
exceptional items of value (for example: Imperial Household
porcelain, very high ranked sword smiths, exceptional cloisonné
done by masters, or pristine limited edition prints).
– Top end items
with little to no flaws or defects. Item is in excellent condition
with quality to match. Excellent value for the price.
– Minor defects or
flaws not detracting from value. Overall great condition and
Examples: Minor surface scratches or light surface rust on
swords and fittings; very light toning or fading on woodblock
prints; firing cracks or tiny chips in porcelain or pottery.
– Moderate amount of
flaws or defects which may lower the value of the item. Overall
condition very good.
Examples: Large pits, few small edge chips, deep scratches,
deep rust, in need of polish, or bent/broken tip on swords; dark
toning, moderate faded color, rips or holes in image of woodblock
prints; body cracks or repairs on porcelain and pottery.
– Many flaws or few
major flaws which detract from the value of the item. Overall
condition is good but with obvious deficiencies. Great item for
Examples: Many or large chips on edge of blade, large
amounts of deep rust, numerous deep scratches, in great need of a
polish on swords; very dark toning, heavily faded color, water
damage, large tears or many holes in image of woodblock print;
porcelain or pottery that has been completely broken and repaired
or item with large body cracks or pieces missing.
issue a Certificate of Authenticity by request for any
of our items. Many of our higher value items will come
with a CoA to help you better understand the value of
your items and to help for future resale if needed.
